Ujjain is one among the seven holy pilgrimage sites of Hindus. The city is located in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh and it is the headquarters of Ujjain district. The city houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India and it is one of the ancient cities of India.

Ujjain has been mentioned in many mythological stories and it was the capital of ancient Avanti kingdom. This city hosts Kumbhamela, it was the ancient seat of education and it is believed that the Kshipra River flowing through the city was formed out of nectar of immortality. So, you would be visiting a city that is proud of being an important city.

The Mahakaleswar Mandir which has the revered Jyotirlingam was built during the Maratha rule around 17th century. It is one among the Shakti Peethas of India. Visit during winters. Agriculture is the main occupation.

The city was a cultural centre in the past. The Sanskrit playwright Kalidasa is believed to have lived here. As the stories depict he was blessed by Gadkalika Devi of Ujjain. The city was a center for Vedic learning, and the founder of Hindu calendar -Vikramashaka (Vikramaditya 2nd) had ruled over here.

How to reach:

Ujjain is connected by road and railways. Ujjain Railway Station is a major junction having five stops in the city circuit. It is connected to Indore, Bhopal, Bombay, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore city.

Indore is the nearest major city for air commuters. Indore is at about 55 km from Ujjain. You can take a taxi to reach Ujjain.

The budget hotels are clustered near Nanakheda bus stand which are close to the railway station as well.Mid-range hotels can be found all over the city. Free Ganj area has a good number of mid-range hotels.

Best places to eat in Ujjain:

Ujjain is a treat for vegetarians. Restaurants serving Kashmiri, Punjabi, North Indian food can be found aplenty. A few restaurants along the University Road serve staple non-vegetarian fare.
